In 2009 I wrote about a 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T that has been found twenty five years later. Another collectible car has experienced exactly the same fate, this time a 1969 Camaro. Seems that a girl from New Jersey named named Janice Maffucci had her car stolen in Newark in 1975. Fast forward to February, 2011 and Keith Williams from California bought the vehicle off eBay. Due to certain inconsistencies, he thought to contact the California Highway Patrol, which did a VIN search and realized that the automobile was "hot." So, underneath the law, Janice can get her car back. For Keith, relax a bit as his insurance has him covered.
However, this information on Yahoo's news blog isn't having the story right, so it will be very hard to find out what really happened that led to the vehicle's identity. For one thing, it turned out claimed that the Butternut Yellow six-cylinder Camaro was stolen from the lot, however the VIN (124379) within the video is for a V-8 car.
Additionally, the vehicle was sold like a Super Sport using a 427. The story helps make the implication how the CHP was contacted because the automobile was lacking the main engine, which I'm sure isn't true since an electric train engine transplant just isn't enough to smell something fishy (nor can it be strange to get SS badges on the car that was never a Super Sport). Being a "collage of parts" is apparently par for the course for most first-gen Camaros.
My guess? The VIN for the dashboard was switched, however the hidden VINs around the body didn't match, that was discovered from the savvy owner.
I can view the confusion a non-car person could have in working with VINs, pedigree, and identity, but there exists a good story that's creating more questions than it's answering.
