Thanksgiving 2012 - Julie Obradovic is finishing an extra MA in Educational Administration and already holds an MA in Education from St. Xavier University. Oprah Winfrey honored her in 2004 as one of America's Best Teachers. She has three children including person who has successfully recovered from autism. This recovery is among the things she actually is grateful for.
Julie is another fellow Contributing Editor at Age of Autism and Canary Party Leader. This Thanksgiving, The Thinking Moms' Revolution, a group of parents who describe themselves on Facebook as "...a movement to adopt back our little ones in the arena of autism and in a future full of hope" reprinted Julie's personal Facebook post about giving thanks and thanked her for her contribution to The Thinking Moms and Dads. Below is surely an excerpt of the post:
"Yesterday, I was greeted having a hug plus a kiss on the cheek with a young girl Children's Memorial once said was manifesting her delays because I was disappointed in her own. Dr. handed me the cardboard of the shrink for my husband and I to find out. Yes, WE were the main reason she wasn't developing, he told us. It was 2004.
WE were the reason why she wasn't speaking, had no imagination, was as pale as being a ghost, a swollen belly, a tummy filled with constipation, a gait, dry brittle hair, eczema everywhere, inflamed red gums, non-stop drool, night terrors, no a sense where she is at the world, no eye contact, never-ending ear and bronchial infections, and a whole lot. WE did that to her. 'Cause i was disappointed.
2004, people. 2004.
Well, suffice it to say, I didn't believe that as a possible answer. And yesterday, wow, it hit me hard how grateful I am that I didn't. Yesterday, this same little girl greeted me having a kiss, made her very own breakfast, got herself dressed and ready during the day, vacuumed your entire downstairs, made her bed, and helped with other chores and then we might have our girls' outing towards the movies.
She played with her sister and respected her punishment, no iPad, because last week she got military services weapons assignment. She informed me about her great bowling the night time before, and got her money and gift card ready to the movies. She added her money correctly. She then asked to call an associate, which she did, by memory, and invited the friend to join us. The friend accepted.
We went for the movies where yes, I gave her some popcorn, that was when a major, major no-no where her gut was concerned, with out a thought about diarrhea or yeast. She sat between her sister and her friend, giggling and sharing popcorn, laughing and crying at the movie at appropriate times. (Not once did she have to cover her ears. Her sensory issues have left.) When it was over, they sang songs in a car from the radio generating plans for that next day and Thanksgiving break.
At home, she made a decision to do her homework, due per week, to have it over with and prevent more grounding. She read a whole chapter of the age appropriate book, unassisted, after which wrote a paragraph summary in what she read, unassisted.
My daughter still dresses funny. Matching isn't her thing. She couldn't care less about fashion, or her hair, or girly things. She continues to have terrible handwriting, and math is oh so very hard on her. School in general is hard. She actually tells me thinking hurts. I believe her. And yes, you can still find some social behaviors she's got that are unacceptable, but we're taking care of them.
But yesterday, wow. Wow. Wow, was I reminded what were through and the way far we've come. And, wow, am I grateful."
